Remember when we used to rent videos (VHS tapes)?
We would walk or drive to the video store, then spend 10-20 minutes walking up and down the aisles, scoping out the new releases and hoping the movie you wanted was in… Then we’d go back home and pop it into the VCR. When done,we’d have to rewind it before returning it to the store (before 7pm the next day). Every once in a while, if the movie was old or really popular, the tape would be somewhat damaged and the picture would get all warped for a few seconds…
God forbid the VCR would ever eat the ribbon! “Don’t pull it, you’re gonna break it!!!” Oh, my, the drama. When the commotion was over and the demon living inside the VCR finally released the ribbon, there was nothing like the joy of seeing that the ribbon wasn’t torn or broken (“SUCCESS! Take THAT demon spawn!”). Of course, you immediately pop the tape back into the possessed VCR, rewind it a bit so you don’t miss anything and hit Play. Sure, the picture is a bit scrunchy but once it passed over the questionable spot, everything was back to normal and all was forgotten.
There were some pretty tense moments in the 80s.
Don’t even get me started on the big hair.
