It was our turn to host a blind wine tasting . This involved lots of planning, research, shopping for wines and creating the quiz sheets… It was actually really fun to see everyone tasting and trying to figure out what the wines were.
I did two rounds – one international which consisted of 3 wines from anywhere in the world, and a VQA round which consisted of 3 VQA wines from either BC or Ontario. These were the wines I ended up choosing:
International:
- Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir 2009 (California)
- Robertson Shiraz 2009 (South Africa)
- Nuova Cappelletta Barbera del Montferrato (Italy)
VQA:
- Chateau des Charmes Gamay Droit 2008 (Ontario)
- Cave Springs Cabernet Merlot 2007 (Ontario)
- Jackson Triggs Merlot 2007 (BC)
The group had various levels of success. Everyone guessed the italian wine correctly. The shiraz was much milder than what you’d expect from a shiraz which made it difficult to guess – only one of the group got it right.
After the tasting was done, I brought out the snacks:
- Slices of baguette
- Various crackers
- Salad: cherry tomatoes, mini bocconcini cheese, fresh basil, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt/pepper
- Cheese dip (cream cheese, feta cheese and chopped parsley)
- Charcuterie: prosciutto, spicy genoa salami, capicollo
- Cheese plate: Aged cheddar, St. Paulin, goat cheese disks with herbs
- Pâté
- Dessert was a bowl of chocolate truffles.
It was a really fun evening!
