Taste the Season is our favorite of the wine events in Niagara on the Lake. We spent the day there, visiting wineries, had lunch at the Garrison House and dinner at Ravine. It was an awesome day!

We got there just after 12pm and stopped at Trius first followed by Stratus and Jackson Triggs.  Our group really enjoyed the mini pot pie served at Trius with their 2014 Cab Sauv. We also purchased 2 bottles of the wine they served at JT – Cab Franc/Cab Sauv blend – which they served with a yummy beef barley soup.

We had lunch at the Garrison House (a restaurant that has been featured on HGTV’s You Gotta Eat Here) and everyone enjoyed their meal – very very good. I had the charcuterie platter – delicious. Highly recommended: Great place, friendly service, great food and local wines.

After lunch we tackled several more wineries: Strewn, Konzelmann, Rancourt, Pondview, Coyote’s Run, Chateau des Charmes and Ravine. We crossed over to Ravine’s restaurant for dinner. We probably ate too much and drank too much but had a great time catching up with friends and visiting some of our favourite wineries that we hadn’t been to in a while, all in beautiful Niagara on the Lake. What’s not to like? 🙂

For Valentine’s Day, Chris and I wanted to do something different. What could be better than trying something new at one of our favourite vineyards: Thirty Bench in Beamsville! We’re wine club members and received an invite for a special Valentine’s Day event – snowshoeing in the vineyards followed by lunch at the winery prepared by The Good Earth with wine pairings. We signed up ASAP!

We arrived at the winery and enjoyed a glass of their amazing Winemakers’ Riesling while we waited for everyone to arrive to head outside. The rear room was setup beautifully for lunch:

The view was beautiful:

It was a cold overcast day and as we started out to put our snowshoes on, it was snowing lightly. We trekked up a small incline to one corner of the vineyard, right by the Wood Post Riesling section.  We enjoyed a wine tasting (I believe it was the Wood Post Riesling) and some very informative commentary from Emma the winemaker. It was still lightly snowing as we continued our snowshoe trek.

At the next stop we enjoyed another tasting (this time was red, don’t recall which one unfortunately). This is where the snow and wind picked up. We had the choice of continuing to the next and final stop at the far corner of the vineyard or return to the winery to thaw and prep for lunch. Since it was quite windy and almost blizzarding at this point, most of the group we were with opted to return to the winery.

Lunch was delicious and each course / pairing presented by Therese from the Good Earth and Emma (Thirty Bench winemaker). We started with a tomato chipotle soup paired with a Gewürztraminer. Next was the winter salad paired with a rosee. Then the main course – a modern take on beef bourguignon paired with a pinot noir and a merlot. And a savoury cheesecake for dessert paired with the Benchmark red. Plus a chocolate truffle to take home (which never made it home – we ate it right away!). Everything was delicious and the pairings were spot on. Great job to The Good Earth and Thirty Bench for putting together a great day and superb lunch.

After picking up a few of our favourite bottles from the store, we sadly headed home.

We’ll definitely do this again next year!

We rang in the New Year at Peller Estates Winery enjoying an awesome meal with wine pairings. We spent the night in a hotel in Niagara on the Lake afterwards. The evening began at 7pm with cocktails (ice wine martinis – yum!) and canapés in the foyer. We then headed downstairs to the wine cellar for the sit down dinner. The looong table sat roughly 80 people (our guesstimate):

We enjoyed 5 courses and our favourites were the bison course (bison rib, tournedos and marrow – the bison was so tender you could easily pull it apart with your fork) and the potatoes were shaped like bones with the marrow filing piped inside – so creative!) and the dessert course – delicious!

After dinner, we went back up to the foyer for some sparkly, cheese, icewine marshmallows roasted over the fire out back (although we were too full!) and the countdown. It was a great night!

Before leaving the house we tried taking some pics – after several minutes of laughing hysterically and failed attempts, this one turned out pretty good (you can tell we were trying to keep the giggles under wraps hehehe). 🙂

Here’s to a happy and healthy 2014!

A few months ago, I was the lucky winner of a Savour the Sights dinner (contest held by Embrace Niagara) at Jackson Triggs in Niagara on the Lake. We decided to pair it with the Wine & Herb festival this past weekend and made a weekend of it. The Wine & Herb passport allows you to visit  20+ wineries to sample a pairing. Each winery is assigned an herb and their pairing consists of an hors d’oeuvre inspired by the assigned herb with a wine tasting.

Saturday we visited wineries and enjoyed some great pairings:

CHÂTEAU DES CHARMES

Herb Inspiration: Basil (Lemon)

2011 Aligote/ Coq au Vin Chicken Breast and Smoked Chili Lemon Emulsion

COYOTE’S RUN ESTATE WINERY

Herb Inspiration: Hoja Santa

2009 Red Paw Vineyard Syrah / Adabo and Red Paw Syrah Braised Beef Tostado (Mexican Pizza)

COLANERI ESTATE WINERY

Herb Inspiration: Garlic

2009 Chardonnay / Turkey Tetrazzini with Liberina’s Roasted Garlic Cream Sauce

INNISKILLIN WINES

Herb Inspiration: Cilantro

Late Autumn Riesling / Kent Farms Chicken Curry with Gomes Tomato and Cilantro

MARYNISSEN ESTATES WINERY

Herb Inspiration: Sage (Peppery)

2009 Merlot / Seared Sage Pork Belly with Merlot Soaked Cherries

RIVERVIEW CELLARS ESTATE WINERY

Herb Inspiration: Mojito Mint

2011 Bianco Riesling Gewurztraminer / Mojito Mint Pistachio Ice Cream

We enjoyed having a refreshing minty ice cream pairing for dessert. 🙂

As usual, we stopped at Ravine for lunch:

Chris:

  • Soup of the day: Potato & leek with a mini scone/muffin
  • Ravine burger with green salad – aged cheddar, tomato, lettuce, Ravine’s smoked Canadian bacon

Val:

  • Lemon dill brined smoked scallop – cauliflower puree, Ravine pork belly, eggplant & goat cheese ravioli
  • Spinach, goat cheese and wild mushroom quiche

We stocked up on some great wines! I was happy to pick up some perfect-for-the-patio Inniskillin Pinot Noir Rosee (Nicki – this ones for you! :))

We checked into the hotel to freshen up before heading out to Jackson Triggs for dinner!

We were warmly welcomed at the winery and handed a seemingly bottomless glass of sparkling wine which we enjoyed in the Great Hall with about 12-14 other guests while hors d’oervres were passed. Note that I’ve posted a pic of the menu for the evening down below which contains the details of the wines and courses. Graham and Paul were the hosts and were awesome throughout the evening. Graham provided some history about the winery – we were interested to learn that Mr. Jackson and Mr. Triggs were from the Labatt wine division of yore.

Paul then gave us a tour of the facility and explained the grapes and winemaking process. Paul made the tour really fun and informative at the same time.

The views of the vineyard were superb. During the walk through the facility, we enjoyed 2 more courses:

Another Sparkling (Sauvignon Blanc based) paired with a vibrant amuse-bouche of salmon sashimi – very tasty and the citrusy wine was fantastic.

Then, outside, we enjoyed a white Meritage with an asparagus tart, quail egg and goat cheese and asparagus soup. This was a fabulous representation of spring – delicious. Again, the view was amazing:

Then we moved inside for 2 more courses. The chef Tim Mackiddie introduced each course with such enthusiasm – everyone at the table was eager to dig in after his passionate intro!

IMG_4240

A Chardonnay paired with a fiddle head risotto with mascarpone and forest mushrooms:

IMG_4243

Followed by a Pinot Noir paired with a blue crab cake with rhubard and fennel (sorry no pic – I dug in too quickly!).

We were then led to the Barrel Cellar for the main course which was a Syrah paired with an Ontario hen cooked in hay with spring peas and spring sqaush. The hen was delicious – so moist! The chef explained how they cooked it in hay to retain the moisture – very cool!

Then, up to the Boutique for the dessert party where we enjoyed a Vidal Icewine with several passed dessert bites.

IMG_4242

It was a fantastic event – I can’t say enough about Jackson Triggs. The meal and wines were excellent as was the tour of the facility and the vineyard views were spectacular. Our hosts Graham and Paul were awesome and made our night very special. Our fellow guests were great as well – we met some wonderful people.

Big Thanks to Embrace Niagara for holding the contest! You guys ROCK! 🙂
